These cards can be used by anyone who has conversations with people who are experiencing difficulty due to significant changes in their lives and are looking for ways to focus on what’s important to them rather than just on problems.
SKATTLE Speak cards have been designed to demonstrate how we speak in conversations and to offer a tool to assist in ‘how to’ have difficult conversations.
SKATTLE Speak Cards are designed with the belief that reducing life's complexities to categories of behaviour such as anger, bullying or sadness renders the larger cultural and political context that these behaviours grew out of invisible. We believe that when the spotlight is put on where, how and why these behaviours emerged we can start to understand what’s important to the person and reduce effects such as blame or invitations to ‘fix’ or advise. When doing so we aim to enable individuals and groups to have a voice, take a stand against injustice and take steps toward the life that they dream of. We do this by positioning the individuals and groups who are living with the effects of life-changing experiences as the experts in their own lives.
“All words in the SKATTLE Speak cards have been identified by young people who have engaged in conversations with SKATTLE counsellors while experiencing difficult life changes”
