All human services practitioners, particularly valuable to direct clinical staff (social workers, psychologists, counsellors and group facilitators) or students and new graduates wishing to learn counselling skills.

Content strongly aligns with Psychological Focused Strategies as utilised in mental health care practice in Australia, including CBT, ACT, relaxation skills, skills training and behavioural strategies. The workshop is delivered with the principles and practices of Strengths-based theory and Expressive/Art therapy and is highly practical based.

Pre-requisite/Notes

No individual clinical support will be available or provided by the facilitator during or after the workshop. Please consider these parameters when deciding to attend this workshop given it may touch on personal and emotional experiences – most skills are taught in a self-supervision and peer support framework.

 Pre-requisites:

  • A Degree/Tertiary qualification in the helping professions where you have the potential to provide clinical or treatment/counselling based work or required to provide Focused Psychological Services or other mental health support (or currently studying in your final years)
  • A current workplace or external supervisor or willingness to commence such
  • A drive and willingness to engage in self-reflection
  • A willingness to seek your own personal counselling where necessary to work through personal barriers to providing excellent clinical support to your clients

Workshop Outline:

Are you transitioning from Case Work to Clinical support or wish to increase your clinical skills? Are you exploring working in mental health or trauma? Are you a student or new graduate with a thirst for practical ideas to use in clinical settings? If the answer is Yes, then this workshop is for you.

We enter the helping professions to support the vulnerable and the harmed. We become a Social Worker, Psychologist, Counsellor and Support Worker to be there for people who need and ask for support, kindness, direction and understanding. When we sit with people at their lowest we are challenged greatly in our skill set but also our passion is also ignited to help more! As time goes on we find people’s worlds are more complex and people’s hurts are deep and tangles. This is often where we start to pursue clinical and more in depth support skills or even pursue becoming a supervisor, private practitioner or to specialise in clinical counselling.

What happens when we start to move into more clinical or therapy based work? Given we are humans too the answer is: a truck load of Anxiety and Overwhelm. Feelings of inadequacy or being unprepared, self-doubt, and even burn out. Feeling like we lack the clinical skills deserving of our clients. The desire to ensure we support people well and maintain a superb duty of care.

During this workshop you will explore yourself as an emerging or current Clinician and test out your own anxieties, worries and doubts about your clinical skills. You will enjoy a balance of self-reflection with numerous practice skills; receive lots of ideas for clinical applications and creative directives to use with clients and supervisees. You will engage in group and peer supervision and be able to share your learnings with each other. You will be gently guided through activities that you can use straight away in appropriate settings with clients presenting with low to moderate mental health or other concerns.

Come join us, take on the challenge to Create Your Clinical-Self

Workshop Outcomes:

By the close of the workshop participants will have:

  • Gained a better understanding of how anxiety and self -doubt is triggered within ourselves and what to do about it
  • Enhanced both self-awareness and emotional regulation skills
