A new workshop for 2018.

  • Please wear comfortable clothing and bring any games or resources you commonly use in your practice as we will explore these during the workshop.
  • Please bring 1-2 de-identified case studies to use for the group reflection/supervision session.

Workshop Outline:

Providing support or counselling to a person or family is a key role played by human services workers. For those accessing support, engaging in and receiving such support can be extremely uncomfortable and daunting and can fuel resistance and avoidance. Human beings, through life and through traumatic experiences, develop coping mechanisms and ways of relating to people that can present as a barrier to the support we offer. This workshop will immerse you in the world of your clients and help you notice and face their resistant, avoidant and tangential behaviours with respect, compassion and courage. You will explore the concepts of transference, countertransference, cognitive distortions, values and motivations through case studies, reflective supervision circles, experiential activities and examples of art, music and writing based activities in counselling sessions. You will also explore ways to build a therapeutic alliance when resistance and/or ruptures occur.

I challenge you to think of these mechanisms of resistance and avoidance as not barriers but normal human behaviours – our role is to work with not against these behaviours in a way that makes change possible. This takes guts and courage to bypass our own anxieties as practitioner – use this workshop to gain confidence and ways to engage with people when it is uncomfortable.

Workshop Outcomes:

By the close of the workshop participants will have:

  • Increased confidence in working alongside people who appear resistant or avoidant
  • Learnt and practiced different ways to honour people and the head space with which they present
  • Tried out strategies to build relationship when you face a brick wall
  • Specific strategies/games/activities that may support people to be comfortable with support.
  • Reflect on ways to reenergise the resources you commonly use
  • Participated in a group supervision session
