Target Group:

This workshop is designed for anyone working alongside clients who may have played with the ideas of strengths based practice or seeking to be refreshed. This could include case managers, counsellors, youth workers, guidance officers, support workers, social workers, psychologists, speech pathologists, occupation therapists, and/or workers from the field of disability, housing, domestic violence, child protection, education, health and mental health.

This workshop can be used as standalone refresher to brush up on your skills or can be used in conjunction with Level 2 & 3 to give a full 3 day Strengths-based Practice workshop. Level 2 and 3 will build on the prior workshop. If attending all three sessions the period of time in between each workshop will allow participants to practice, and reflect.

Separate workshop dates will offer flexibility to your attendance.

Level 2: Intermediate Strengths-Based Practice

Level 3: Advanced Strengths-Based Practice

Workshop Outline:

As a worker in the helping industry there can be many invitations to become “problem” focused in our work. This one day refresher invites participants to step away from “the doing”, to re-connect with the principles and beliefs of strengths-based practice. Participants will have an opportunity to be re-invigorated in their strengths based practice. A five stage map for client-directed change will be explored. The workshop will pay particular attention to how we can assist clients to define issues in ways that separate them from “the problem”, to open the door to more constructive ways of responding.  A range of practice stories will be shared to demonstrate how these ideas could translate into various practice settings. Participants will have a chance to practice strengths based skills throughout the day.

Workshop Outcomes:

At the completion of the workshop participants will have:

  • Contrast problem focused with strengths-based approaches
  • Briefly re-visiting the principles, beliefs and ideas of strengths-based practice
  • Review a 5 stage map for client directed change
  • Explore how to assist clients to define issues in constructive ways
  • Reflect on the implications for “assessment” processes.
