Target Group:

This workshop is designed for anyone working alongside clients who may have played with the ideas of strengths based practice or seeking to be refreshed. This could include case managers, counsellors, youth workers, guidance officers, support workers, social workers, psychologists, speech pathologists, occupation therapists, and/or workers from the field of disability, housing, domestic violence, child protection, education, health and mental health.

This workshop can be used as standalone refresher to brush up on your skills or can be used in conjunction with Level 1 & 3 to give a full 3 day Strengths-based Practice workshop. Level 1 and 3 will build on the prior workshop. If attending all three sessions the period of time in between each workshop will allow participants to practice, and reflect.

Separate workshop dates will offer flexibility to your attendance.

Level 1: Strengths-Based Practice

Level 3: Advanced Strengths-Based Practice

A pre-requisite for attendance to Level 2 workshop: the completion of level 1 workshop. This is because our experience tells us that if people attend Level 2 workshops without having done the introductory training they can easily get lost and not benefit from the workshop. As well, other participants who want to move ahead can get frustrated at having to go over material they have already covered.

However, if you have been using the strengths approach in your work or have done previous strengths-based training or modules within your University degree you may feel that you are able to attend the workshop. The other possibility is that you could read a recommended book, The Strengths Approach by Wayne McCashen which is available from our bookstore.

We certainly don’t exclude anyone from attending the workshop if they haven’t completed the pre-requisite but will leave it up to the individual to decide if they would like to attend.

Workshop Outline:

The complexity of the problems that we can face in the helping industry can blur our vision to only see problem saturated accounts of our clients and their lives. These accounts can undermine our efforts to work in partnership with clients and other stakeholders to open the door to other possibilities. This workshop offers participants the opportunity to gain some altitude, to re-connect with their preferred ways of practice, informed by strengths-based principles. Participants will have the opportunity to explore how to offer acknowledgements with clients to enable a sense of connectedness and recognition. This workshop explores in detail how to create spaces for strengths-based planning in partnership with clients. Particular attention will be paid to how to develop concrete and measurable goals that enhance client’s experience of small successes. Various practice stories will be shared that demonstrate how these practices can be applied in various settings. Participants will have an opportunity to “have-a-go” at these strengths-based skills.

Workshop Outcomes:

At the completion of the workshop participants will have:

  • How to acknowledge our clients experiences, skills and knowledge despite the challenges they may face
  • Explore skills and tools for strengths-based client-directed planning processes
  • Define concrete and measurable goals setting processes
  • Explore resource adding options that add value to client’s lives
  • How to notice change and offer reminders of hope.
