Target Group:

For counsellors, social/human service workers, pastoral care workers, psychologists, youth workers, students or anyone who is a supervisor or a supervisee and interested in practice development.

Prerequisite/Notes:

Some understanding of post structuralist practice frameworks such as client/person centred, strengths based, narrative and solution focused approaches would be an advantage for participation.

Outline:

Do you ever find yourself in your role as a supervisor wondering how you can support supervisees to build on their own skills and knowledge? Do you get invited into coming up with all the answers and feel you are doing all the work? Or as a supervisee do you ever feel that the advice offered by your supervisor doesn’t feel quite right? In your role as supervisor or supervisee do you aspire to having conversations that enable you to reflect and make decisions about your own practice?

This workshop will offer workers, whether they are supervisors, supervisees or both an opportunity to explore ways of having conversations that centre the knowledge and expertise of the supervisee. In doing so the supervisee has the opportunity to build on what they know and the supervisor has a tool to make this possible.

Outcome:

At the completion of this workshop, participants will have:

• explored some assumptions underpinning a capacity building approach to supervision conversations about practice
• explored some conversational maps to assist in these conversations
• explored how these ideas can be applied to their own work context.

Facilitator Bio:

Vicki Carrick has worked in the community sector for over 25 years and her work roles include case management, child protection, community development, disability program coordination, group facilitation, international development work, project work and training. Vicki has completed a Master of Social Administration and further study in Facilitation and Strengths-based Supervision, and she is currently completing a Master of Mental Health/Master of Social Work. Vicki is passionate about strengths-based practice, and this is reflected in her practice framework!
